Understanding the Process

A  set fine is imposed after the conviction of a parking ticket infraction.  When a conviction is registered against your plate, a court fee is added in addition to the set fine.  If the fine is not paid, in addition to the applicable court fees, the debt promptly goes into default for non-payment.

If the total fines from each parking ticket (including the additional court charges) are not paid in full, the City of Toronto notifies the Ministry of Transportation to suspend your License Plate privileges. For each defaulted fine notice received from the City, the Ministry of Transportation adds a service fee of $20.

For Example:
The original $30 parking ticket is now a total of $66.
$30 set fine
+ $16 City of Toronto surcharge
+ $20 Ministry of Transportation fee.
= $66

A Plate denial (Plate suspension) means:

  1. You can not register a vehicle, purchase a License Plate(s), renew a License Plate(s) or purchase your mandatory plate validation stickers.
  2. A dealership for a leased vehicle can not , on your behalf, register a vehicle, purchase a License Plate(s), re-new your License Plate(s) or purchase your mandatory plate validation stickers. Your License Plate privileges are suspended indefinitely or until the defaulted debt is collected and/or dealt with judicially.
